Burundi / Mahonda Station

from $20.00

This coffee originates from the Mahonda Washing Station situated in the Gitega region of Burundi. Established by Sogestal Kirimiro and named after its district, Mahonda was one of many Sogestal management boards overseeing washing station operations. In 2020, most Sogestal stations, including Mahonda, transitioned to government control under ODECA.

Gitega's cooler climate and lower rainfall result in slower cherry maturation compared to other regions in Burundi. Positioned at an elevation of 1932 meters above sea level, Mahonda operates at a higher altitude than most stations in the country, collaborating with farms from 13 surrounding hills and districts. Annually, approximately 144 smallholder producers deliver their cherries to Mahonda, harvested from family-operated farms typically under 1 hectare in size. Upon arrival, the cherries undergo flotation before being fermented for 18-24 hours and dried on raised beds for 15 to 20 days before export.
